The practice of Transcendental Meditation offers a natural method for taking our attention deep within our conscious mind,

far from the outside physical realm, with the intention of tapping into the source of thought. By focusing our attention on our awareness, we open the door to an altered state of consciousness. Once this meditative technique is applied and transcendental consciousness takes over, the physiological symptoms are felt all over as the shoulders drop, the breath becomes rhythmic, the heart steadies, and the mind stills. In the deep state of full relaxation, the entire body may pulsate and in other instances, the individual’s organs and energy centers will pulsate or flutter indicating an internal awakening. Brain scans also show a similar brain function to those who are experiencing the so-called “flow” state. The depth to which one travels depends on their level of comfort in allowing their body to relax into the warm sensation of pure awareness without twitching when the sensation of falling or floating occurs.

To achieve the transcendental state of consciousness, one must access a kind of internal fountainhead. This infinite reservoir of energy and intelligence has also been called Kundalini. Regular practice can habituate inner balance by improving an individual’s energy and intelligence through normalized hormone secretions and a calm nervous system. To achieve a transcendental state it is necessary that one trains his or her mind to achieve this state regularly and effortlessly. Fortunately the body cherishes this state of complete relaxation, therefore once this state has been attained a few times, the body will remember and more easily slide back into the transcendental state of peace and contentment. When the conscious mind reaches the source of thought and allows the convergence to shift the body into transcendental consciousness without twitching, they will then be filled with an energy and intelligence deeper than that of typical daily existence.

During the experience, the entire body will enter into what seems like a state of paralysis, and a tingling warmth will take over while the body re-calibrates the nervous system and stimulates the organs. Through exercising this technique, any individual can improve their ability and performance in a very natural way, thereby giving them an advantage to be more efficient, productive, and creative in life without accumulating excess stress and strain on the body temple due to the surmounting daily responsibilities of society.

For individuals aspiring for accomplishment in life, they need not only to engage in heightened awareness, but also to improve performance through increased energy. The enthusiasm to increasing their wealth brings most Westerners to entertain more activity, but the increasing activity will not be at the expense of one’s health if balance is maintained by increasing energy and intelligence. Transcendental meditation not only improves the capacity of man on the psychological level, but also improves the ability of the nervous system.

The state of the nervous system directly corresponds to the state of consciousness, and the mind thinks as the nervous system behaves. If the nervous system is functioning normally and healthily, then our thoughts will be clear, aspirations will be pure and all thoughts will be powerful, insightful, and productive. If the nervous system is strained, then it will not function normally resulting in distorted aspiration, unclear thoughts, and low productivity. In such a state of foggy awareness, tensions will naturally be increasing all the time. Transcendental Meditation is a simple, natural method with which the nervous system can be strengthened to function normally, which in turn will produce an improved state of consciousness.

The teaching of Transcendental Meditation has been set up in a very standard format. The practice involves thinking of a word or sound, a sound devoid of meaning; The reason is that if one concentrates on a word with a particular meaning, definition is a static thing meaning it will bring about a corresponding thought. We want to avoid thought impulses stimulated by pattern recognition. We just want to think of and hear an internal, mental sound and whether the sound lowers or raises, the meaning remains the same. There is no meaning, there is only sound and we pay attention to the thought of that sound repeating slowly and steadily in our mind. The sound can be “om” or “ahhhhh” or any other syllable that does not associate with a memory in your mind. If the mind is on meaning, there can be no chance of refining the meaning, but if the mind isn’t focused on the meaning, then the sound will lead your thoughts through the corridors of possibility. This sound functions as an impulse, a blinking light or an echo in the distance as the mind is pulsating with this repetitive vibratory chanting mantra. If we do not try to manipulate the thought, concentrate, or hold on to it in any way, then the thought will be refined and dissolve back into the recesses of the mind. And as the sound fades like a ripple in a lake slowly levels, the mind will return to a state of stillness.

This natural tendency for the mind to settle down and enter a state of peace is all that we need in meditation. In a very innocent manner, think of your chosen sound and only that particular sound and every time your hear it, listen to it more deeply in search for an even finer meaning. Mentally examine the sound until it begins to die out and the mind is left completely still and wide awake without any mental chatter. That inner wakefulness is unbounded awareness. With the mind completely silent, the body becomes completely absent of any tension and is able to resume regular operation to maintain balanced hormones and a relaxed nervous system. Like a wave settling down on a flat surface over the entire ocean, this is the silent state of the mind, and it is so fulfilling that the physiology of the body, having tasted the experience, cherishes it. Maintaining one’s positive state of consciousness aids in the defense against psychological troubles such as anxiety and depression. In the words of an old proverb, it is wise to “avert the danger that has not yet come.”

“It is sickness that costs money, not health. To be healthy, one has to be regular in the awareness of one’s own immortality of consciousness within him. He does not need money. Money is needed when people fall sick, and more money is needed when the medicines are not able to cure the sicknesses. And more money and more money … any amount of money can be spent, but if prevention is not instituted, there is no hope for the people to be healthy,” said teacher of Transcendental Meditation to the Western World, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1918-2008), on health care and transcendental Meditation. “To build more hospitals to alleviate sickness and suffering for people who have already fallen ill is a laudable act of charity,” he said, but “it is infinitely more important to find ways and means of preventing people from falling sick and of ensuring that they will always enjoy good health.”
