The Dalai Lama has said we have an ‘urgent responsibility’ to protect wildlife and the environment.
The Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader made the comments in a Facebook post earlier today.
‘Urgent responsibility’
He wrote: “The destruction of nature and wildlife populations is a result of ignorance, greed and lack of respect for the earth’s living things.
“Our actions affect others. We human beings are the only species with the power to destroy the natural world as we know it.
“Yet, if we have such a capacity for destruction, so, too, do we have the capacity to protect wildlife and the environment – we have an urgent responsibility to do so.”
Climate change
The Dalai Lama has spoken out about human responsibility towards the environment on multiple occassions. In 2015, he branded climate change a ‘problem which human beings created’.
He made a video about the issue, as part of a Tibetan government campaign, saying: “This is not a question of one nation or two nations. This is a question of humanity. Our world is our home.
“There’s no other planet where we may move or shift.”
