by Josh Ko: With the Tesla Model 2, electric car ownership looks set to become more affordable. But what else can be expected from this upcoming electric vehicle?
Electric vehicles have made a drastic change in the way we operate vehicles today, though their drawbacks always were their hefty price. Due to the expensive cost of materials, the idea of cheap electric vehicles previously wasn’t possible, but that is starting to change as Elon Musk presents the Tesla Model 2 concept to the public.
While we don’t have too much information due to Tesla’s confidentiality, we do have just enough to be excited about their upcoming release. Tesla’s goal is to create unique and sustainable energy sources, and plans to further its goal with the Tesla Model 2 in 2023.
Tesla Model 2 Technical Specs
The Tesla Model 2 is rumored to start around $25,000, making it a drastically cheaper alternative than current electric vehicles, and vehicles in general. The cheaper starting price allows for people of all financial backgrounds to further play a role in environmental conservation, whereas previously, it was relatively excluded to the middle class and up.
The budget-friendly EV is expected to have different packages: standard and long-range, which seems to be Tesla’s customary procedure. The Model 2 doesn’t pack performance, though it wasn’t necessarily designed to do so. Still, the Model 2 has instant power and torque courtesy of its electric motors, so the expected 0 to 60 time is around 6 to 8 seconds.
The Model 2 hinted to feature Tesla’s autonomous driving feature, but more importantly, their new 4680 batteries. These batteries are named after their dimensions: 46mm x 80mm. They are considerably cheaper to manufacture, produce five times more energy, 16% more range, and six times more power, making them far more versatile than traditional batteries. With the help of the new 4680 batteries, the Model 2 is expected to have a travel range of 250 to 300 miles. Best of all, it’s no longer a concept and is all manufactured in-house.
Tesla Model 2: Different Design Concepts
During the Battery Day conference, Elon Musk and his team hinted at the coming lineup of the Model 2. While this conference call didn’t feature any concrete pictures of the design, there are plenty of sketches and even concept designs that are floating around. Some anticipated body styles are the compact hatchback, compact, and crossover. These form factors seem to fit all different driving needs.
Despite being a $25,000 car, the Model 2 is still expected to have Tesla’s traditional screen and classy interior. The team at Tesla revealed at the conference that they contemplated whether to include a steering wheel or not, insinuating the high chance of autonomous driving being included. Given the features the Model 2 packs, it has plenty of amenities for its price.
The Tesla Model 2 in the coming year will be the first Tesla manufactured outside the United States, being manufactured in Shanghai, China. Courtesy of the meticulous craftsmanship, the Model 2 is expected to have a state-of-the-art look.
Tesla Model 2 Expectations
Our expectations for the Model 2 are extremely high, as we anticipate a budget-friendly and autonomous electric vehicle. Despite its shortcomings in performance, the Model 2 compensates in many places elsewhere, making this a great entry vehicle for those entering the EV world.
Considering Tesla’s prior experience in vehicle manufacturing and battery technology, the Model 2 is highly anticipated amongst Tesla enthusiasts. With the rise of used car prices and fuel costs, the need for a budget-friendly electric vehicle has never been more important. With the features that have been announced and its outstanding starting price, the Tesla Model 2 seems like it will make a splash in the market upon arrival.
