Ayurveda and Yoga are “sister sciences” and go hand in hand as they both stem from the same ancient Indian philosophy…

and belief system dating back thousands of years. Both approach physical and mental health from the same perspective, that long-lasting well- being takes time, discipline and commitment.

Ayurveda is a system that helps maintain a person’s health by using the inherent principles of nature to bring the individual back into equilibrium with their true self. Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term, made up of the words “ayus” and “veda.” “Ayus” means life and “Veda” means knowledge or science. The term “ayurveda” thus means ‘the knowledge of life’ or ‘the science of life’. According to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar Charaka, “ayu” comprises the mind, body, senses and the soul. Widely regarded as the oldest form of healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is an intricate medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago.

Yoga is similar, however, it tends to be more focused on finding the way towards growing towards a more meaningful existence through the use of the physical body, breathing practices and the dedication of life to the inner light that is inherent within all of us. The technique of holding specific physical postures are used to strengthen the body and mind, concentration of the breathe is used to bring calm and tranquility to the mind and prayers, chanting and the repetition of mantra’s are offered up as gifts of energy to the Divine Light within.

Ayurveda as a medical system directly influences the practice of yoga through the use of dosha’s or ‘constitution types’. Each person has a type of mental and physical constitution that requires specific types of activities, food and thought processes to maintain balance of body, mind and soul. Therefore, after getting assessed by a professional Ayurvedic Docter, one can then cater their yoga practice to suite their specific needs. This ensures that we receive the maximum benefit of our yoga practice, and move positively towards fulfilling our boundless potential as human beings.
