Gestalt Prayer by Fritz Perls

Fritz Perls: Yesterday, I visited with my mother for a few hours, showing her a bit about how to use the internet beyond email. She recited a line from a poem to offer some insight into a relationship issue we were discussing. Fritz-Perls-awakenShe only knew one line, but didn’t know the rest of the poem, or who wrote it. So, I showed her how to “google” it (typing the entire line inside quotes in her google search box). It turns out, a famous psychotherapist wrote the poem back in the 1960′s. It also turns out that the little “prayer” sums up pretty well two or three of the blogs/articles I’ve recently posted on “Authenticity,” “Anxiety,” “boundaries,” and “Selfishness and Love.” If you read the poem (below) and you read those blogs/articles on this website, you’ll see what I mean.

Here’s the Poem:

“I do my thing and you do your thing.
I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,
And you are not in this world to live up to mine.
You are you, and I am I, and if by chance we find each other, it’s beautiful.
If not, it can’t be helped.”

(, 1969)
