Linda Sechrist, in Natural Awakenings Magazine, recently interviewed Dr. Beckwith. Here is an excerpt form the interview:
What can we do to create conditions that will allow us to develop the talents and capacities to meet some of our world’s needs?
“First, we have to ignore the messages of today’s world: become rich and famous by developing a level of celebrity; consume, consume, consume and get all the toys you can. We have to shift our priorities and activate our inherent capacity to express unconditional love compassion, joy, creativity and peace.”
“The media bombards us constantly with messages about “outer” values that have nothing to do character development, which is what determines our destiny. Returning to basic character development means a return to honoring values such as our interconnectedness with all life, loving kindness, generosity of the heart and selfless service.”
The New Thought principle advises: “Every problem is a question trying to ask itself. Every question is an answer trying to reveal itself. Every answer is an action trying to be taken. And every action is a way of life trying to be born.” How can this principle help us meet our challenges?
“A problem is emblematic if a perception that we hold and it invites us to ask empowering questions. For instance, when an individual perceives a lack of finances, the question that may be asking for answers are what is the nature of real prosperity, what constitutes genuine wealth?”
“If the individual goes within and sincerely asks, answers that may be revealed are: Prosperity is an invisible and intangible substance that is everywhere, an energy that is never created or destroyed.”
“Answers lead to actions. When you ask, what action shall I take, even while perceiving lack, the answer might be to “give and share.” Waiting under the thought that you have nothing to give may be a deeper insight wanting to emerge: an understanding that that being prosperous means having a smile, a letter of appreciation, an offer of encouragement, an hour of volunteer work, making an overdue apology, giving yourself credit where credit is due. This could lead to a new and more generous way of life seeking to emerge.”
