Supporting Children Who See Beyond the Veil

by Megan Larson: As a child psychotherapist, I am continually humbled by the depth and complexity of the young minds I encounter.

Beyond the Veil-awaken Many of these children possess a unique gift: the ability to perceive realities beyond the ordinary. In ancient cultures, such children were often revered as gifted and intuitive, seen as potential healers and seers.

In our modern, Western world, however, such experiences are frequently misunderstood, dismissed, or even pathologized. Well-intentioned professionals, bound by the limitations of scientific paradigms, may struggle to support these children, whose experiences often defy rational explanation.

Fortunately, by drawing inspiration from ancient wisdom and contemporary psychological insights, we can offer these children the understanding and support they need to thrive. Here are some key approaches:

  1. Validate and Normalize Their Experiences
  • Affirm their reality: Let children know that their experiences are real and valid. Avoid dismissing or minimizing their perceptions.
  • Normalize their gifts: Explain that many cultures throughout history have valued and celebrated such abilities.
  • Foster a sense of belonging: Connect them with supportive communities or online forums where they can share their experiences with like-minded peers.
  1. Hold Space and Listen Deeply
  • Create a safe and non-judgmental environment: Ensure that children feel comfortable sharing their experiences without fear of ridicule or criticism.
  • Practice active listening: Pay full attention to their stories, asking open-ended questions to encourage deeper exploration.
  • Avoid imposing your own beliefs: Maintain a neutral stance, allowing children to form their own interpretations.
  1. Transform Fear into Friendliness
  • Address fears and anxieties: Acknowledge their fears and validate their feelings.
  • Reframe negative experiences: Help children to reimagine frightening encounters in a more positive light.
  • Cultivate compassion and empathy: Encourage children to develop a compassionate understanding of all beings, regardless of their form or origin.

By embracing these approaches, we can empower children to navigate their unique experiences with confidence and resilience. Let us honor their gifts and support their growth into compassionate, insightful individuals who can make a positive impact on the world.
